Almost every construction worker on a UK site typically needs a CSCS card. This includes both skilled and unskilled workers, from bricklayers to supervisors – anyone who sets foot on site. It is required by most employers in the construction industry.

Strictly speaking, holding a CSCS Card isn’t mandated by law. However, most construction sites across the UK demand it as evidence of your competence in carrying out tasks safely and efficiently. 

This means that in most instances, you may not be allowed to work on a major site without having a CSCS card. Some sites contractors, and companies will not employ people without a valid CSCS card.

Failing to meet minimum requirements doesn’t mean you’re completely out of luck. It just means there’s room for improvement! You’ll need to acquire further training or qualifications to satisfy the criteria. And then apply for the card.

 

You sure can! While it’s always better to have your card in hand before starting work, many employers will allow you to work while awaiting its arrival. Just remember, this decision lies entirely with your employer.

To apply for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card in the UK, follow these steps:

  • Determine the Right Card: First, determine which type of CSCS card is suitable for your job or occupation. There are various card types, each tailored to different construction roles (e.g., skilled worker, manager, apprentice).   • Pass the CITB HS&E Test: To be eligible for a CSCS card, you must pass the Health, Safety, and Environment Test (aka the Touch Screen Test) within the last two years. You can book this test online through the official CITB website.It test costs £22.50.
  • Gather Required Documents: You will need certain documents as proof of your qualifications, training, and identity. These documents and scanned copies may include qualifications, training certificates, a passport-sized photo, and proof of identity. For example, to get a Green Labourer card, you need evidence of passing the CITB HS&E test within the last two years, along with the Level 1 Award Health and Safety in Construction test. 
  • Apply Online or by Phone: You can apply for a CSCS card either online (www.cscs.uk.com) or by phone (0344 994 4777). You’ll also need a credit/debit card to pay the applicable fee of £36 for the card.
  •  Receive Your CSCS Card: If your application is approved, you will receive your CSCS card by mail at the address you provided.

  • Proof of passing the relevant CITB HS&E Test is required. Have your test ID number available; it’s located at the top of the pass certificate.
  • Have a scanned copy of your qualification certificate, proof of registration to complete a qualification or proof of professional body membership for the particular card you’re applying for. E.g. To snag a black Manager CSCS card, you need to complete a construction-related NVQ at level 6 or higher.
  • Proof of competency or qualification related to construction work.
