Understanding CSCS Cards

CSCS, or the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, is a UK-based system that’s become pivotal in the construction industry. It’s a certification process that verifies an individual’s competency and qualification to safely work on a construction site.

These cards are color-coded, with each color representing a different level of expertise or role in the industry. For instance, green cards are for laborers while black ones are meant for managers.

The validity of these cards typically lasts five years after which renewal becomes necessary. You’ll need to take and pass the CITB Health Safety Environment Test again unless you’ve done so within the last 2 years.

Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Green Card: For workers performing basic tasks.
  • Blue Card: Skilled workers who have achieved an NVQ or SVQ.
  • Gold Card: Supervisors and personnel with advanced craft skills.
  • Black Card: Managers and technical supervisors.
  • Red Card: Trainees who are attending courses towards recognized qualifications.

Remember! Each card requires its own set of criteria for obtaining it—and renewing it too!

The detailed Renewal Process

CSCS Card Renewal: An infographics on how to renew CSCS Cards

In 2021, I renewed my White CSCS card. I had to provide my qualifications, including the NEBOSH Diploma, and wait for approval. Fortunately, everything went smoothly, and I received my new card in the mail shortly after.

Here, I’ll be giving you more details on how to renew your CSCS Card.

  1.     Make sure you have completed all qualifications for the CSCS Card you need

Diving into the renewal process, you must be clear about the type of CSCS card you want to replace. Your work type, qualifications, or professional body membership will dictate which CSCS card is right for you. For instance, if you’re a site supervisor, you have no business applying for the Red Trainee Card, which is for an apprentice or trainee.

If there’s any uncertainty about the card or test you need to pass, you can go to the ‘Card Finder’ site to find this information.

  1. Pass the CITB Health Safety Environment Test

To renew, replace or apply for a new CSCS card, it’s necessary to demonstrate that you have the required training and qualifications for your job. One way CSCS ensures this is through the CITB HS&E Test, which you must take and pass as proof that you’re up-to-date with safety procedures and practices. But if you’ve taken this test within 2 years, you do not need to take it again.

  1. Provide proof of all relevant qualifications or certificates since your last card was issued.

You need to have evidence of any new qualifications or certifications you’ve acquired since your last application. It’s necessary to demonstrate that you have the required training and qualifications for your job. And as such, deserve to apply for, or renew the card that fits your skills.

  1. Login or Create Your Online CSCS Account/ Call the CSCS Contact Centre

Once your prep work is done, if you already have an account with the CSCS online portal just sign in and start with your renewal. In case you don’t have an account yet, head over to their website and create one by visiting their Applying for cards page.

If online isn’t your thing, no worries! You can also call 0344 99 44 777 to apply over the phone – though online applications tend to be faster.

Before hitting that ‘apply’ button make sure:

  • It’s been more than 24 hours since completing your CITB test
  • You know which type of card suits best (use the ‘Card Finder’ tool if you’re unsure!)
  • All personal and professional details are accurate
  • Your CITB Test Certification is not more than two years old
  • You know your CITB Testing ID
  • You have all the necessary Test Certifications
  • A debit or credit card to pay for the card fee (£36)

With all the above done, you can expect your CSCS card within 3-4 working days after you apply.

If you need any advice or clarification about this process, you can reach out to the Train in Health and Safety team. We are always here to help.

Eligibility and Requirements to Renew CSCS Cards

Before you renew your card, there are specific eligibility criteria and requirements that need to be met:

  • Renewals have to happen between six months before and after the printed expiry date on your existing card. So keep tabs on when the current one expires to avoid any work hiccups.
  • Only online or phone renewals are accepted now; postal applications aren’t.
  • Be sure of which CSCS Card suits your job role best. This depends on various factors such as the type of work you do and any professional body memberships you might have. If unsure about this, refer to the ‘Card Finder’ tool available at www.cscsonline.uk.com/card-finder.
  • Keep proof of any new qualifications or certifications handy.
  • You will need to pass the CITB HS&E test at an appropriate level to apply. But if you passed this in the last two years, then no repeat test is needed!
  • Remember, renewing a card costs £36 and there’s a £22.50 fee for taking the CITB HS&E test as part of renewal.
  • If you’ve switched jobs since last time, inform CSCS about it. Also, evidence of current qualifications since the last application must be provided.
  • Typically cards arrive within 10 days but could take longer during peak periods. If nothing appears after four weeks though, call up CSCS at 0344 994 4777!
  • – Bear in mind that applications left longer than 90 days will incur an additional £36 charge.

The different types of CSCS Cards that can be renewed, with their expiry dates

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) in the UK offers 13 different types of cards for construction industry workers. Out of these 13, only 4 cards can be renewed. They are also valid for 5 years. This includes the following:

–      Blue Skilled Worker card

–      Gold Skilled Worker card

–      Gold Supervisory card

–      Black Manager card

CSCS Cards that cannot be renewed

Let’s take a moment to discuss which cards can’t be renewed. Yes, you heard it right! Not all cards are renewable and here they are:

CSCS Labourer Green Card

The Labourer card, often recognized by its green color, is dedicated to individuals carrying out laboring duties. It’s valid for five years and unfortunately isn’t renewable. If you’re a holder of this particular card, you’ll need to retake the Health, Safety, and Environment Test every five years to obtain a new one.

White CSCS Card (Academically Qualified Person)

Then there’s the white Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card – reserved for those who’ve completed specific construction-related degrees such as HNDs, HNCs, and CIOB Certificates. Like the green labourer card, this one lasts five years but isn’t renewable.

White CSCS Card (Professionally Qualified Person)

Next up on the non-renewable list is another white variant – the Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card. This one caters to professionals such as surveyors, engineers, and architects who are members of professional bodies approved by CSCS. Once expired this must be applied for as a new card application. It’s valid for five years.

Red CSCS Card (Experienced Technical, Supervisor, and Manager)

Now let’s turn our attention towards the red cards. Beginning with the Experienced Technical, Supervisor, and Manager variant – this is another non-renewable type of card. It’s only valid for three years. The expectation is that by the time of expiry, you’ll have completed your qualification allowing you to apply for a skilled CSCS card instead!

Red CSCS Card (Apprentice)

The Apprentice card is valid for four years and six months and cannot be renewed.

Red CSCS Provisional Card (temporary only)

You can only apply for a provisional card once, and it lasts a mere six months without the option of renewal.

Red CSCS Card (Experienced Worker)

This temporary card can’t be renewed either. It expires after just one year. You’ll need evidence of further on-the-job experience or updated qualifications when it expires.

Red Industry Placement Card (temporary)

A temporary solution, the Red Industry Placement Card, is valid for 3 years and similarly cannot be renewed.

Red CSCS Card (Trainee)

Finally, we have the Trainee card. This red card is valid for five years and is also non-renewable. So, to continue working in construction roles, trainees will need to upgrade to a skilled worker’s CSCS Card after completing their training.

In conclusion, knowing which cards can’t be renewed helps you plan and prepare for re-certification where necessary.
