What the IOSH Managing Safely Exam & Assessment is all about
The multiple-choice exam
I’ll start the 45-minute multiple-choice exam.
It’s exactly what it sounds like: you’ll choose the correct answer from a set of options. No essays. Just clear, focused assessments of your understanding.
During the course module, we spend plenty of time discussing the core topics—risk management, hazard identification, and responsibilities. By the time the exam rolls around, these concepts will feel second nature.
You don’t need to worry about having an extensive health and safety background to pass the course. This makes it widely applicable across various industries.
You’ll need to score at least 36 out of 60 to pass this section.
The risk assessment project
The second part is where things get practical.
You’re expected to conduct a risk assessment of your workplace and apply what you’ve learned during the course to a real workplace scenario.
You’re required to identify at least four hazards, assess the likelihood of harm, and suggest appropriate control measures. This hands-on element is a great way to solidify your learning, and as long as you understand the course content, it shouldn’t be too difficult to complete.
You’ll have two weeks to complete the project. And you’ll need to score at least 23 out of 38 to pass.
As long as you’ve followed along during the course, the project will feel more like an extension of your learning than an added challenge.
Is it really beginner-friendly?
Absolutely. The IOSH Managing Safely course is a Level 2 qualification, which means it’s for people with little to no prior experience in health and safety.
It’s especially popular among managers and supervisors who need to understand their responsibilities but aren’t health and safety specialists.
The course covers seven modules, focusing on practical topics like assessing risks, understanding responsibilities, and investigating incidents.
We take things step by step, ensuring no one feels left behind.
Tips for passing the IOSH assessment
