CHAS, SafeContractor and Constructionline Applications I – How I Can Help You Get Accredited

I’ve seen it time and again, small businesses, especially in construction, miss out on jobs just because they don’t have the right accreditations.

Clients want proof that you take health and safety seriously, and without SSIP schemes like CHAS, SafeContractor and Constructionline applications, you’re often not even considered for the work.

The good thing is that I help businesses like yours get accredited, fast and with no stress. Whether it’s CHAS, Constructionline, or SafeContractor applications, I do all the work for you from start to finish—preparing all your documents, talking to the assessors, and making sure you’re not left scratching your head over what a PQQ even means.

What are these health and safety schemes?

CHAS, SafeContractor & Constructionline Applications

If you’ve ever been told you can’t tender for a job without a health and safety certificate, it’s probably one of these three:

  • CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme)
  • SafeContractor (by Alcumus)
  • Constructionline

These are all part of SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement), which was set up to standardize health and safety pre-qualification and makes it easier for clients to verify that contractors like you are compliant.

If you have one, many clients will accept it without making you get another. This is called Deem to Satisfy—a phrase that might sound odd but saves you both time and money.

Still, each client has their preferences. Some councils prefer CHAS. Some private developers go with SafeContractor. Main contractors often ask for Constructionline.

CHAS

Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme has been around since 1997 and is probably the most familiar name. It has over 70,000 contractors signed up, and once you’re on the CHAS database, clients can see you’re meeting basic health and safety standards.

I always tell clients that CHAS speeds things up. Instead of repeating the same health and safety documents over and over for every tender, CHAS acts as pre-approval. It often replaces the need to fill in a full Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ). That alone saves hours.

Yes, the process takes time. You need proper policies, risk assessments, method statements, and more. But once it’s done, it pays off. Most of my clients tell me they win more tenders after getting CHAS accredited.

And best of all? If you already have CHAS, you might be able to get another SSIP scheme like SafeContractor or Constructionline at a discount using the Deem to Satisfy rule.

SafeContractor

SafeContractor, run by Alcumus, is popular with private firms especially retail, hospitality, and some local authorities. Over 33,000 businesses use it. Once approved, you’re listed on their database, so clients can find you easily.

A nice bonus is the badge. Having “SafeContractor Approved” on your quotes and email signature builds trust quickly.

Constructionline

Constructionline goes beyond health and safety. It includes business finances, environmental standards, equality, diversity practices, and more.

If your eyes glaze over at the mention of PAS 91 or the Common Assessment Standard, don’t worry, Constructionline covers those for you.

For businesses looking to work with large main contractors or government bodies, Constructionline can open doors. It helps that it now includes an SSIP certificate too so you don’t need both CHAS and Constructionline anymore unless the client specifically asks.

This one is especially useful if you want access to tender opportunities directly. They have a platform called Marketplace, where buyers post jobs and search for qualified suppliers. You don’t have to keep scouring the internet looking for opportunities. It’s all in one place.

And speed? Their average verification turnaround is just three days.
