What CSCS Card Can You Get With No Qualifications?

What CSCS Card can you get with no qualifications? If you’re starting in construction without formal qualifications, you can still get a CSCS card. The primary options available are:

  1.   The Green Labourer Card: This is the go-to option for those who are just beginning in the construction industry and do not have any formal qualifications. It is also the easiest CSCS card to get.
  2.   Red CSCS Temporary Cards: These are suitable for various situations, such as for those who already have some work experience, or for trainees and apprentices in training.

These cards let you access construction sites while you pursue more training and qualifications. I want to point out that these cards could be the important first step in your construction career.

CSCS cards you can apply for with no qualifications

Even without qualifications, you have options for CSCS cards. The primary ones are the Green Labourer Card and various types of Red CSCS temporary cards.

These include Red Provisional, Industry Placement, Apprentice, Trainee, and Experienced Worker cards. These cards cater to different levels of experience and stages in your construction career.

I’ll be sharing more details about these cards below:

The Green Labourer Card

If you’re starting out in construction and don’t have formal qualifications, the Green Labourer CSCS Card is the best option to begin with. This card is perfect for laborers or those new to the industry.

Get Licensed, a training marketplace website clarifies that you don’t need any prior formal qualifications like GCSEs, NVQs, or construction experience to apply for this card.

Even though formal qualifications aren’t necessary, there are some requirements you must meet:

  •         Pass the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test (Touch Screen Test)This test evaluates your basic knowledge of health and safety practices on construction sites. It’s an important requirement and serves as a baseline for obtaining any CSCS Card.
  •         Complete the Required Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment: To qualify for the Green CSCS Card,  you must pass the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.
  • This course is available through training providers like TrainInHealthandSafety. Our course is great for both newcomers and experienced workers looking to refresh their knowledge.

The Red CSCS Temporary Cards

Red CSCS cards are temporary solutions for individuals at various stages in their construction careers who don’t yet have qualifications.

These cards are provisional and are designed to be used until you can acquire a standard CSCS card.

SuperSkills Construction Training provides a clear explanation of these cards’ roles: “Provisional CSCS cards are issued to people who are working temporarily – for example someone who is being considered for a full time job, or as a potential Apprentice and who is on work experience…“

It’s important to note that these temporary cards cannot be renewed.

Rather, “They provide a means for people to enter the trade or start work on a “Fully Carded” site – or for an employer to migrate the workforce to fully qualified status.” This category also includes a “Trainee” card and one for apprentices, both of which are red and allow access to work on carded sites.

They include the following cards:

It’s mainly for those in probationary job periods where employers are evaluating their fit for the role. This card is valid for six months, during which time you can complete the required course to get the Labourer card.

  • Red Apprentice Card: This cscs apprentice card is for individuals who are currently in recognized apprenticeship programs. This card is free and remains valid for four years and six months.

I want to note that it cannot be renewed. By the time the card expires, apprentices are expected to have completed their training and should then apply for a skilled CSCS card. To get this card, you’ll need to show proof of your apprenticeship registration and that you’ve passed the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test or a similar approved test.

  • Red Industry Placement Card: The Red Industry Placement CSCS Card is designed for individuals who are completing a construction-related qualification that includes a 30-day work placement. This card has a validity period of three years and it cannot be renewed.
  • Red Experienced Worker Card: Often referred to as the “Time Served” card, this red cscs card caters to those who have practical experience but may not have formal qualifications.

To be eligible, you should be pursuing a construction-related NVQ or SVQ at Level 2 or higher and have a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment test result. Also, this card is temporary, valid for one year. After completing your NVQ, you can move on to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card.

  • Red Trainee Card: The Red Trainee CSCS Card is designed for individuals currently in training or apprenticeships in construction-related fields. To qualify for this card, you need to:

–  Show proof of registration in a recognized apprenticeship program or with a construction training provider.

–  Have passed the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the past two years.

–  This card is valid for five years and is non-renewable. By the time the card expires, holders should have completed their training or apprenticeship.

Red Experienced Technical, Supervisory, and Management Card: This card is tailored for supervisors, managers, and technical workers in the construction industry who have practical experience in their roles. The card is valid for three years. Before the card expires, holders should complete any pending qualifications and then apply for a skilled CSCS card.

The Grandfather Rights in CSCS Cards

Are CSCS cards being phased out? Well, not really.

The concept of Grandfather Rights, also known as Industry Accreditation previously allowed workers to obtain CSCS cards based on employer recommendations without formal qualifications.

However, as per the CSCS Chief Executive Graham Wren’s statement and directive of the body, this method was phased out in 2010 and as per the latest changes, these cards will expire by December 2024 and not be renewed.

On the CSCS website, it is stated that “From 1st January 2020, all cards renewed under Industry Accreditation will expire on 31st December 2024 and CSCS will stop issuing the card from 30th June 2024.”

Existing cardholders can renew until December 2024, but after this, all applicants now need recognized construction-related qualifications.
